Fiction

Ruin and Rising - Leigh Bardugo

“Thanks for the rescue."

"Everyone needs a hobby."

"I thought yours was preening."

"Two hobbies.”

The breakdown: Strong female lead + supernatural fight scenes + will they won’t they

Reminds me of: Part 3 of pretty much any epic trilogy, so Jedi, Mockingjay, etc. (Don’t get annoyed at me, that’s literally how epic works.)

Best advice: Start at the beginning of the series or you’ll probably be irritated.

What to look forward to: Characters you actually care about; well plotted action sequences.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - V.E. Schwab

“Henry wonders, as they wait in the queue, if some people have natural style, or if they simply have the discipline to curate themselves every day.”

The breakdown: A deal with a devil + a love story + a twist

Reminds me of: The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Midnight Library…and a bunch of books I actually like.

Best advice: Give it a few chapters. I’m not sure whether it’s the book or where my head was at when I started it, but it definitely took a minute for me to get into it.

What to look forward to: Addie’s way of making a mark on the world; moments of quiet wonder; a surprisingly satisfying resolution.
